Sabaragamuwa Province

Sabaragamuwa Province

Sabaragamuwa Province includes Ratnapura and Kegalle districts and is internationally known for gem mining. Ratnapura, meaning “City of Gems,” is the center of Sri Lanka’s gemstone industry, producing sapphires, rubies, and other precious stones.

Agriculture is also important, with rubber, tea, paddy, and fruits widely cultivated. The province has rich natural resources, including forests, rivers, and biodiversity hotspots. It serves as a gateway to Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The economy is a mix of traditional industries and agriculture, with small-scale enterprises dominating. Flooding and environmental management are ongoing challenges due to heavy rainfall.

Culturally, Sabaragamuwa has distinct dance forms, rituals, and folklore. The province plays a vital role in Sri Lanka’s gem trade, environmental conservation, and agricultural output.
