North Western Province

The North Western Province includes Kurunegala and Puttalam districts and is known for its agricultural productivity and cultural heritage. Kurunegala serves as the provincial capital and is a major commercial center in the region.

Agriculture is the dominant economic activity, with extensive cultivation of coconut, paddy, and vegetables. The province is often referred to as Sri Lanka’s “coconut triangle” due to high coconut production. Puttalam district also supports fisheries and salt production.

Industries such as cement manufacturing, food processing, and small-scale industries contribute to the local economy. The province has good road connectivity, linking it to Colombo and the central regions.

Culturally, the North Western Province has historical significance, having served as a capital during ancient Sri Lankan kingdoms. Religious harmony is evident, with Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities coexisting. The province plays an important role in food security, rural livelihoods, and regional trade.
