Eastern Province

The Eastern Province is one of Sri Lanka’s most diverse regions, both culturally and geographically. It consists of Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Ampara districts and is home to Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim communities living side by side. Trincomalee, with its natural deep-water harbor, is one of the finest ports in the world.

Agriculture, fisheries, and tourism are the main economic activities. Paddy cultivation is extensive, making the province an important contributor to national rice production. Fishing supports coastal livelihoods, while tourism thrives due to pristine beaches, lagoons, and marine life.

The Eastern Province has immense potential for eco-tourism and renewable energy development. Trincomalee’s harbor also holds strategic and economic significance. Infrastructure development has improved significantly in recent years, supporting economic growth.

Culturally, the province is rich in religious diversity, with Buddhist temples, Hindu kovils, and mosques. Festivals and traditions reflect peaceful coexistence. The Eastern Province plays a vital role in agriculture, national unity, and future economic expansion.
