North Central Province

North Central Province

The North Central Province is one of the most historically significant regions in Sri Lanka. It includes Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts, both of which were ancient capitals of the country. The province is central to Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and ancient irrigation systems.

Agriculture dominates the economy, especially paddy cultivation supported by large reservoirs and canals built centuries ago. These irrigation networks continue to sustain farming communities today. Chena cultivation and livestock farming are also common.

Tourism plays a major role due to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient stupas, monasteries, and archaeological ruins. Pilgrims and tourists visit year-round, contributing to local livelihoods.

The province is sparsely populated compared to urban regions, offering a slower-paced rural lifestyle. Culturally, it reflects traditional Sri Lankan values and practices. The North Central Province stands as a symbol of ancient engineering, sustainability, and spiritual heritage.
